The Ryder Cup opens with an intense match between Rahm and Hatton against DeChambeau and Thomas

Farmingdale, N.Y. — The Ryder Cup opens Friday at Bethpage Black with a high-profile Foursomes clash that includes all three LIV Golf participants this week. Europe’s Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton will lead off against the United States duo of Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas.

High-Stakes Rivalry in the Ryder Cup

U.S. captain Keegan Bradley backed the new American partnership, describing both players as elite competitors well suited to set the tone early. On the European side, captain Luke Donald noted that Rahm and Hatton have already handled the pressure of hitting first in Rome in 2023 and trusts them to anchor the start once again.

Rahm and Hatton arrive as teammates from Legion XIII, which last month captured the LIV Golf Michigan Team Championship in a playoff over DeChambeau’s Crushers GC, where he partnered with Paul Casey. Rahm and Hatton also bring strong Ryder Cup form in the alternate-shot format, having won both of their Foursomes matches in Europe’s 2023 victory.

The opening pairing adds another chapter to a familiar rivalry. On American soil at Whistling Straits in 2021, Rahm and Hatton tied a Fourballs match against DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler. For DeChambeau, this will be his first Ryder Cup appearance alongside Thomas.

The opening match is set for 7:10 a.m. ET. The remaining Friday Foursomes are:

  • Scottie Scheffler/Russell Henley (USA) vs. Ludvig Aberg/Matt Fitzpatrick (Europe)
  • Collin Morikawa/Harris English (USA) vs. Rory McIlroy/Tommy Fleetwood (Europe)
  • Xander Schauffele/Patrick Cantlay (USA) vs. Robert MacIntyre/Viktor Hovland (Europe)

As the excitement builds for the Ryder Cup, both teams are prepared to showcase their skills and strategies in this prestigious event. The results from these matches could set the tone for the rest of the competition, making each pairing crucial in the overall outcome of the tournament.
