As World Animal Day is marked on Saturday, October 4, the Giro d’Italia community is highlighting the pets that so often trail the peloton and brighten life on the road. Away from the occasional stray that disrupts a stage, dogs in particular have become regular, welcome faces around riders and teams.
Pets of the Giro d’Italia: A Unique Bond
In 2025, Trufa, a dachshund owned by Juan Ayuso and his partner Laura, made frequent appearances at Tirreno–Adriatico and the Giro d’Italia, even sporting the blue leader’s jersey of the “Race of the Two Seas.” Filippo Ganna’s dog, Mia, has been a constant presence as the Italian has established himself as one of the premier time trial specialists of his era.
The year’s Giro winner, Simon Yates of Visma | Lease a Bike, is known for traveling with his poodle Tinker, while his brother Adam Yates of UAE Team Emirates-XRG often trains with Zoe, a Samoyed. Visma | Lease a Bike teammate and 2024 Vuelta a España champion Sepp Kuss drew attention when his dog Bimba accompanied celebrations all the way to Madrid. In 2019, Dario Cataldo marked his stage win in Como by celebrating with his dogs.
The list extends beyond the Giro. Tom Pidcock of Q36.5 is frequently seen at road and mountain bike races with his two dachshunds, Chestnut and Acorn. Demi Vollering, the 2023 Tour de France winner with FDJ-SUEZ, is often trailed by her dog Flo during training. Floortje Mackaij of Movistar Team is also regularly joined by her dog Bella at events.
From podium ceremonies to training rides, these animals have become part of the traveling family of professional cycling, adding a lighter touch to one of the sport’s toughest calendars. The unique bond between cyclists and their pets not only enhances the atmosphere during races but also brings joy to both competitors and fans alike. As we celebrate World Animal Day, let’s appreciate the furry companions who make the journey of cycling even more special.
