Jake Walman has agreed to a seven-year, $49 million contract with the Edmonton Oilers, marking a significant commitment from the team as they seek to bolster their defense. The deal, which takes effect next season, carries a $7 million average annual value. At 29 years old, Walman was on track to become an unrestricted free agent after this season, making this contract a crucial step for both him and the Oilers.
Recent Moves by the Edmonton Oilers
This signing is the Oilers’ second major move on the same day. Earlier, they secured a two-year, $25 million deal with center Connor McDavid, which will also commence next season. These strategic signings indicate the Oilers’ intent to strengthen their roster as they continue their pursuit of the Stanley Cup.
Walman is currently wrapping up the final year of a three-year, $10.2 million contract ($3.4 million AAV) he signed with the Detroit Red Wings on February 28, 2023. His journey saw him traded to the San Jose Sharks on June 25, 2024, before Edmonton acquired him on March 7. After joining the Oilers, Walman demonstrated his value by posting eight points (one goal, seven assists) and averaging 21:26 of ice time over 15 regular-season games. In the playoffs, he ranked second among Edmonton defensemen with 10 points (two goals, eight assists) in 22 games, contributing significantly to the team’s success as they reached the Stanley Cup Final for the second consecutive year.
However, Walman is currently dealing with an undisclosed injury, casting uncertainty over his availability for the season opener against the Calgary Flames on Wednesday. His health will be a crucial factor as the Oilers aim to start the season strong.
Originally drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the third round (82nd overall) of the 2014 NHL Draft, Walman has accumulated 91 points (32 goals, 59 assists) in 267 career regular-season games across his tenures with the Blues, Red Wings, Sharks, and Oilers. Additionally, he has recorded 10 points (two goals, eight assists) in 23 playoff appearances, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure.
