During the NHL general managers’ meetings in Manalapan, Florida, Minnesota Wild executive Bill Guerin described the intense pressure he experienced as Team USA’s GM during the Olympic men’s hockey final. Data from a health-tracking ring he wears revealed that his stress levels were in the highest range for hours on February 22 in Milan, when the United States triumphed over Canada 2-1 in overtime, securing its first Olympic men’s hockey gold since 1980. His heart rate averaged above 100 beats per minute, climbed past 120, and peaked around 140 before settling after Jack Hughes scored the winning goal.

Guerin’s Health Monitoring and Stress Management

Guerin, 55, has worn the health-monitoring ring nearly around the clock for approximately 18 months. He utilizes it to track his sleep, stress, and heart rate as part of his overall health routine. The app’s daytime stress tracker categorizes periods as restored, relaxed, engaged, or stressed. On the day of the gold medal game, his readings jumped from restored straight to stressed and fluctuated between stressed and engaged for much of the day, finally slipping into relaxed following the overtime goal. The app recorded a total of seven hours and 45 minutes in the stressed zone.

He mentioned that this tool has reinforced his ability to cope well with the grind of the NHL season, particularly because he can unwind at night and maintain consistent sleep patterns. Guerin also emphasizes the importance of building calm into his daily routine, especially during games, to effectively manage pressure.

Having played in 1,263 NHL games, where he accumulated 856 points (429 goals, 427 assists) with teams like New Jersey, Edmonton, and Pittsburgh, Guerin understands the difference between having control and being a spectator. His illustrious career included winning the Stanley Cup with the Devils in 1995 and the Penguins in 2009, as well as helping Team USA secure the 1996 World Cup of Hockey title against Canada. He also participated in the Olympics in 1998, 2002, and 2006, earning a silver medal in 2002 after a loss to Canada in the final. As a general manager, once the puck drops, his work is done, raising the stakes and stress in critical events like the Olympics and NHL playoffs.

As the Minnesota Wild continue their pursuit of the Stanley Cup, currently sitting third in the Central Division and tied for third in NHL points with Carolina and Buffalo, Guerin plans to keep leveraging the ring’s data. This will help him protect his sleep, monitor his heart rate, and avoid unnecessary stress as they prepare for the postseason push ahead.
