James Hagens has signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Boston Bruins and could make his NHL debut as soon as Saturday against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The deal begins this season and carries an average annual value of $975,000.
Boston Bruins’ Playoff Push
Boston enters the final stretch at 43-26-10, holding the first wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Bruins are four points ahead of the Ottawa Senators, have dropped four straight (0-2-2), and have three regular-season games remaining. This makes Hagens’ potential debut even more exciting as the team is in a crucial phase of the season.
Hagens, 19, was selected seventh overall by Boston in the 2025 NHL Draft. He joined Providence in the AHL on March 24 on an amateur tryout and recorded four points (one goal, three assists) in six games. His transition from college to professional hockey has been impressive, and fans are eager to see him continue that momentum at the NHL level.
Before turning pro, he led Boston College this season with 47 points (23 goals, 24 assists) in 34 games, and paced the team with six game-winning goals and two hat tricks. His performance earned him a place on Hockey East’s All-Rookie Team the previous season, where he posted 37 points (11 goals, 26 assists) in 37 games. Such accolades demonstrate his skill and readiness for the challenges of the NHL.
Prior to college, Hagens spent two seasons (2022-24) with the U.S. National Team Development Program, where his 187 points (72 goals, 115 assists) rank fifth in program history. This background has equipped him with the experience and determination needed to excel at the highest level of hockey.
The Hauppauge, New York, native has played for the United States at two World Junior Championships (2025, 2026) and two Under-18 World Championships (2023, 2024). He won gold at the 2025 World Juniors and the 2023 U-18 tournament, and set the single-tournament scoring record at the 2024 U-18 Worlds with 22 points, earning tournament MVP while helping the U.S. claim silver. With such impressive credentials, fans and analysts alike are optimistic about Hagens’ future contributions to the Boston Bruins as they strive for playoff success.
