FC Midtjylland winger Mikel Gogorza is edging closer to his ambition of joining Denmark’s senior national team, even as he works back from an injury. The 18-year-old has already been named Young Player of the Month in the 3F Superliga, made 43 first-team appearances for FCM, and, most recently, was highlighted in a national-team context.
Gogorza’s Journey Back to Fitness
His rapid rise paused in late August when he was forced off in the closing minutes against Silkeborg shortly after scoring. He recognized immediately that the problem was serious, a rare setback for a player who has not dealt with a lengthy injury in the past five to six years. The layoff arrived during his strongest spell to date, with Midtjylland in good form and pushing for European football.
A key part of his development has come away from the pitch. Since moving up to the first-team squad about a year ago, Gogorza has added nine kilograms through a tailored plan led by FCM’s Head of Nutrition, Jacob Nortvig. The increased strength has helped him compete in physical and running duels without losing pace, while his technical qualities remain central to his game. Dietary adjustments, including daily vegetable-based smoothies, have supported the program.
Gogorza’s progress has also drawn attention at the highest level. During Viaplay’s Onside broadcast, senior national team head coach Brian Riemer named him among four young Superliga players he is monitoring closely. The Danish-Basque wide player has 11 caps and eight goals for Denmark’s U19s, has featured at U18 level, and had been selected for the current U21 squad.
Once fit, he is targeting a return to a busy schedule that includes an away match against Roma and a tie with Brann, based just a short distance from his birthplace in Bergen, Norway. Family connections there add an extra layer of anticipation as he looks to pick up where he left off. Mikel Gogorza’s determination and resilience are sure to make waves in Danish football as he continues his journey toward the senior national team.
