Japanese talent Sakamoto impresses in Wimbledon qualifying with win over Britain’s Matusevich

Several notable names moved into the second round of Wimbledon qualifying on Monday, while a past quarter-finalist bowed out early.

Key Performances in Wimbledon Qualifying

Daniel Evans, who plans to retire after this year’s grass-court major, opened his campaign with a 7-6(2), 6-3 win over Juan Carlos Prado Angelo. The 36-year-old Briton, chasing an 11th main-draw appearance at SW19, next faces Australia’s Tristan Schoolkate, a 7-5, 6-3 winner against British wild card Johannus Monday.

Japan’s 19-year-old Rei Sakamoto edged Anton Matusevich 7-6(6), 3-6, 6-3 to stay on course for a Wimbledon debut. Earlier this season, he qualified for the Australian Open and fell in five sets to Rafael Jodar, showcasing his potential on the international stage.

China’s Buyunchaokete, fresh off consecutive grass-court Challenger titles in Birmingham and Ilkley, stretched his winning streak to 11 matches by defeating Hugo Dellien 6-4, 6-0. His impressive performance indicates that he is a player to watch in the upcoming rounds.

Former Wimbledon quarter-finalist David Goffin, who reached the last eight in 2019 and 2022, faced a surprising upset at the hands of Italy’s Andrea Guerrieri. Goffin lost the match 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, marking a disappointing early exit for the seasoned player. Guerrieri, despite the victory, has yet to record a tour-level win on grass, adding an interesting twist to his triumph.

In other results, American Darwin Blanch beat Filip Cristian Jianu 7-6(1), 6-4; Croatia’s Borna Gojo overcame Coleman Wong 7-6(10), 6-2; and Spain’s Alejandro Moro Canas rallied past Francisco Comesana 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-4. Comesana memorably knocked out Andrey Rublev in the 2024 Wimbledon first round, further emphasizing the unpredictability of the tournament.

As the qualifying rounds progress, tennis fans eagerly await to see how these emerging talents and seasoned players will fare in their pursuit of a coveted spot in the main draw at Wimbledon.
