Zach Werenski’s future with the Columbus Blue Jackets could become clearer after an upcoming meeting between the star defenseman and general manager Don Waddell. Werenski, who turns 29 on July 19, has two seasons left on his contract, which runs through 2027-28. He has not signaled whether he prefers to stay in Columbus beyond that deal, test free agency, or explore a trade. Because two years remain, he is not eligible to sign a new contract with the Blue Jackets until July 1, 2027.
Werenski’s Impressive Track Record
The Norris Trophy winner this season, Werenski led all defensemen after producing 81 points (22 goals, 59 assists) in 75 games. He has spent his entire 10-year NHL career in Columbus and is second on the franchise’s all-time scoring list with 465 points (135 goals, 330 assists) in 642 games, behind Rick Nash’s 547. He has 13 points (four goals, nine assists) in 29 Stanley Cup Playoff games and has made clear he wants more chances on big stages such as the Olympics and World Championships; the United States won the Worlds in 2025.
If Werenski is moved, he would become another member of the United States’ gold medal team from the 2026 Winter Olympics to change clubs. Quinn Hughes was dealt from Vancouver to Minnesota on Dec. 12, 2025, and Ottawa captain Brady Tkachuk was traded to Florida on Sunday.
Waddell recently spoke with Werenski’s agent, Judd Moldaver, and plans to meet with Werenski shortly after the 2026 NHL Draft, which takes place Friday and Saturday. The conversation is expected to focus on Werenski’s long-term interest in remaining with the Blue Jackets; team officials say there is no definitive plan at this stage.
Columbus has missed the playoffs for six straight seasons and holds the No. 14 pick in the draft. The Blue Jackets are listening to offers on that selection as they look to improve their roster, particularly up front, but say the draft will not dictate their approach to Werenski. Team performance next season is expected to play a role in how Werenski views his options. The front office is exploring deals aimed at boosting the forward group and strengthening the club’s offense.
