Zverev reaches Wimbledon fourth round after win over Giron

Aleksander Zverev moved into the Wimbledon fourth round on Saturday with a straight-sets win over Marcos Giron, 6-2, 7-6(4), 6-4. The second seed dominated behind his serve early, then held firm when the American raised the pace in the second set, and closed out the match after two hours and 34 minutes.

Zverev’s Performance at Wimbledon

Zverev controlled the opener and faced down the key moments in the second, saving the only two break points against him before edging the tie-break. He broke in the second game of the third set, was pegged back at 4-2, and immediately broke again to restore control. The German finished with 17 aces and won 77% of his first-serve points (54 of 70), while Giron’s persistent pressure kept the contest tight. Zverev now leads their head-to-head 5-0, winning 13 of 14 sets.

The victory puts Zverev into the Round of 16 at Wimbledon for the fourth time, matching his best result at the tournament. He becomes the third German man in the Open Era to reach the Wimbledon last 16 at least four times, joining Boris Becker and Michael Stich. Wimbledon remains the only major where he has not progressed beyond the fourth round, despite reaching title matches at the other three Slams. Next up is 13th seed Jiri Lehecka, who beat Jaume Munar 6-4, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Elsewhere, sixth seed and last year’s semi-finalist Taylor Fritz rallied past Lorenzo Sonego 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(5) in two hours and 33 minutes, extending his lead in their rivalry to 7-2. Fritz said he feels good about his form and views reaching the second week as the first step toward a deeper run. He is projected to meet Zverev in the quarter-finals if both advance.

Fritz’s next opponent will be Alexander Bublik, who outlasted Frances Tiafoe 4-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(11), 4-6, 6-3 in a gripping five-setter. Bublik saved nine set points in the third set and prevailed after four hours and eight minutes to reach the Wimbledon fourth round for the second time.
