Sønderjyske narrowly lose to Holstein Kiel despite a dream start

Sønderjyske Pre-Season Friendly Match Report

Sønderjyske opened Friday’s pre-season friendly at Holstein Kiel with an early breakthrough but left Germany with a 2-1 defeat after a tight contest in hot, sunny conditions.

Match Highlights

The visitors struck inside two minutes, capitalizing on high pressure as Olti Hyseni pounced on an uncertain moment at the back and drove a long-range shot into the net. Five minutes later, Kiel threatened an equalizer, but goalkeeper Marcus Bundgaard kept the effort out.

Sønderjyske nearly doubled the lead after 11 minutes when Matthew Hoppe squared for Mohamed Cherif on the left, whose angled shot came back off the post. The Danish side continued to trouble the hosts on quick transitions; Hyseni’s low cross on 20 minutes was only half-cleared, and Cherif’s follow-up was blocked.

Both teams traded openings before the break. Ebube Duru produced a vital goal-line clearance to preserve the lead, but Kiel leveled three minutes before halftime with a close-range finish. It was 1-1 at the interval.

Sønderjyske created a clear chance early in the second half but fired just over. With about half an hour remaining, Bundgaard tipped a powerful header over the bar. The hosts went ahead roughly 20 minutes from time when another header struck the underside of the bar and bounced over the line for 2-1.

The visitors pushed for an equalizer. A long throw from Simon Wæver led to a deflected attempt from distance that the home goalkeeper saved, and Daniel Gretarsson sent a low shot narrowly wide. In stoppage time, Wæver’s cutback found substitute Elias Hjort-Pedersen, whose effort was again denied.

Sønderjyske’s preseason continues with a final warm-up match on 17 July at 12:00 against Kolding IF. Fans are eager to see how the team will perform in their last friendly before the regular season begins.
