Elias Olafsson switches to the number 1 shirt at FC Midtjylland, inspired by Jonas Lössl

FC Midtjylland goalkeeper Elias Olafsson will switch from jersey number 16 to number 1 for the coming season. The 26-year-old has been the club’s first-choice keeper for the past two campaigns and has also worn number 1 for Iceland. Number 16 was his first squad number at the academy, making the change a notable milestone.

Transition to Jersey Number 1

Olafsson takes over the shirt long associated with Jonas Lössl, a major figure in his development. He views Lössl as a club legend and recognizes the expectations that come with inheriting the role and the number. This transition is not just a change in digits; it symbolizes Olafsson stepping into a leadership position within the team.

The goalkeeping group now includes new Dutch signing Nordin Bakker. Olafsson expects their similar profiles and work rate to push each other in training. Bakker arrives from the Dutch league, where keepers are often more involved in buildup play, a skill set Olafsson sees as a useful complement. Both are tall, strong in the air, and reliable shot-stoppers, which will enhance the team’s overall performance.

Olafsson is scheduled to wear number 1 for the first time in the Europa League qualifier away to Beşiktaş JK in Istanbul on Thursday, July 23. FC Midtjylland then begins their 3F Superliga season on July 26 with an away match against Sønderjyske at 14:00. This season represents a pivotal moment for Olafsson as he fully embraces his role as the team’s primary goalkeeper, aiming to lead by example and solidify his place in the club’s history.

As fans eagerly anticipate the upcoming matches, Olafsson’s jersey number change adds an exciting layer to the narrative of FC Midtjylland’s season. With a strong focus on teamwork and individual growth, the team is poised for a competitive year ahead.
