Brøndby IF has appointed Steve Cooper as head coach on a contract running until the summer of 2028. The 45-year-old Welshman replaces Frederik Birk and will assume the role once his work permit is approved. He is set to lead the team for the first time in Saturday’s derby against FC Copenhagen.
Steve Cooper’s Impressive Coaching Journey
Cooper arrives with experience from both the Premier League and the Championship. His club résumé includes Nottingham Forest, Swansea City and, most recently, Leicester City. As a head coach, he has overseen 67 Premier League matches and 138 Championship games, showcasing his capability in managing high-pressure situations.
Despite his age, Cooper has spent 18 years in coaching. Much of his early career focused on youth development at Wrexham, Liverpool, and within the English Football Association. He also led several youth national teams over a five-year period, highlighted by a World Cup title with England’s under-17s. This experience indicates his ability to nurture and develop young talent, a key aspect that Brøndby aims to enhance.
Sporting director Benjamin Schmedes said the club views Cooper as a blend of experience and vision who can raise the level of individual players and the wider squad. Brøndby aims to accelerate its progress toward ambitious targets and embed a stronger winning culture. The club believes Cooper brings the leadership and mentality necessary to support that goal. Schmedes also pointed to Cooper’s background with elite young talents and expects him to strengthen the pathway from Brøndby’s Masterclass academy to the first team.
With a proven track record and a commitment to developing talent, Steve Cooper’s appointment as head coach is an exciting new chapter for Brøndby IF. Fans are hopeful that his leadership will guide the team to new heights in both domestic and international competitions.
