Austrian Joel Schwaerzler captured his second ATP Challenger title of the season and the third of his career by winning the Mazovia Open in Poland on Sunday, defeating Andrea Guerrieri 7-6(4), 6-1.
The result ends a difficult run in which the 20-year-old had lost seven of his previous eight matches and moves him up five spots to fourth in the PIF ATP Live Next Gen Race. Spain’s Rafael Jodar leads those standings, followed by Joao Fonseca and Martin Landaluce, with Schwaerzler now in fourth. Earlier this year, he joined a select group of players to win a Challenger title while holding the Junior No. 1 ranking.
Challenger Titles and Rising Stars
In Germany, 22-year-old Tom Gentzsch claimed his first Challenger crown at the Platzmann Open, overcoming Jerome Kym 6-4, 7-6(4). The win ends a streak of three losses in Challenger finals this season after runner-up finishes in Koblenz, Split, and Bunschoten.
In the United States, Edas Butvilas battled through four deciding sets in five matches to take the Lexington Open. The 22-year-old edged Andre Ilagan 6-2, 1-6, 7-6(6) in the final to secure his third Challenger title.
At Challenger 50 level, 22-year-old Gabriele Piraino won his first Challenger trophy at the Plovdiv Challenger in Bulgaria, defeating Petr Nesterov 6-1, 7-6(5). France’s Lucas Poullain, 30, also earned his maiden Challenger title at the ENKA Open in Istanbul, rallying past Ilia Simakin 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.
