Jonas Lössl retires and takes on a new role at FC Midtjylland

Jonas Lössl has ended his playing career at the same club where he began in 2003 and is moving straight into a new position at FC Midtjylland. The 37-year-old former goalkeeper will lead the club’s Human Development work, staying close to the first team and strengthening the focus on individual mental performance training.

Transition from Player to Coach

Lössl finished a career that included more than 470 matches, a Danish league title, appearances for Denmark at two major tournaments, and spells in Ligue 1, the Bundesliga, and the Premier League. He will now design a new structure and approach for mental training at first-team level, using lessons from his own career and insights gathered from his international network.

The aim is to make mental preparation more individualized and embedded in daily work, reflecting how attitudes in elite sport have shifted toward openly embracing performance psychology and well-being. Lössl views mental training as a key driver of performance and wants to help teammates benefit in ways that fit their own needs.

FC Midtjylland sees the initiative as part of its broader push to be innovative and to support players as whole people, creating conditions where mental and athletic development reinforce each other. The club understands that a strong mental framework is essential for athletes to perform at their best.

Lössl described the opportunity to remain at the club as meaningful, noting that he is eager to contribute off the pitch and to translate his experience into a role that supports the squad. He considers the move an important step in his transition from playing to a new phase in football, where his insights will be invaluable.

Before Sunday’s match against Randers, Lössl will go on the pitch to thank FC Midtjylland’s supporters, marking the close of more than three decades in the sport. The club will also bid farewell to Júnior Brumado, who made 135 appearances for Midtjylland, highlighting the importance of legacy and community within the team.
