Next up for Zverev is 25th seed Luciano Darderi, who beat Australian wild card Dane Sweeny 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 to reach the last 16 of the US Open for the first time. Darderi and Zverev last met in Rome in May, when the Italian saved four match points to knock out the German in the fourth round. In other action, 14th seed Learner Tien outlasted Jakub Mensik 6-3, 1-6, 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-4 in a third-round match that finished close to 1:30 a.m. inside Louis Armstrong Stadium. The contest lasted three hours and 24 minutes, showcasing the stamina and determination of both players.
With the win, the 20-year-old Tien became the youngest American to reach the US Open fourth round, matching the mark set by Andy Roddick at the same age in 2002.
