For the second consecutive year, a Denmark men’s national team match will serve as the setting for a special tribute to the more than 40,000 Danes who have been deployed abroad. The recognition will take place on 1 October, when Denmark faces Portugal at Parken.
Veteran Match Initiative: Honoring Those Who Served
As part of the Veteran Match initiative, 100 tickets are being set aside for veterans on a first-come, first-served basis. Before kickoff, veterans will be present in the fan zone, and several will later take the field as flag bearers. Children of veterans will join the teams as player escorts.
Leaders from the Danish Football Association (DBU) and the Danish Sports Confederation (DIF) say they are pleased to continue the effort, emphasizing football’s ability to bring people together and provide a public salute to veterans and their families at the national stadium.
Veteran Match aims to thank former Danish personnel who have served in international missions, acknowledge their families, and remember those who did not return. DIF organizes the initiative with clubs across multiple leagues, including the 3F Superliga and Betinia LIGA in football, Metal Ligaen in ice hockey, and the Bambuni women’s and men’s handball leagues. In 2026, Veteran Match is being held for the seventh year in a row.
Beyond the national team game on 1 October, additional fixtures linked to the initiative run from 18 September to 18 October, with ticket registration for veterans open. The program is financed through Denmark’s defence agreement, ensuring that the contributions of veterans are recognized and honored throughout the country.
This initiative not only highlights the sacrifices made by service members but also fosters a sense of community and support among the Danish population. As fans gather to watch the match, they will also be participating in a heartfelt acknowledgment of those who have served, making this event a significant occasion in Danish sports and national pride.
