Il Lombardia 2025: New route presented in Milan, starting in Como

Organizers in Milan have unveiled the 2025 route for Il Lombardia, setting up a closing weekend for the RCS Sports & Events cycling season on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 October. The race, often called the Classic of the Falling Leaves and the final Monument of the year, will start in Como and immediately climb the Ghisallo from the Asso side. It then drops to Bellagio, follows the shore of Lake Como to Lecco, and enters its hardest phase with a string of demanding ascents: Roncola, Berbenno, Dossena, Zambla Alta, and the Passo di Ganda. The route totals more than 4,400 meters of vertical gain. After descending to Selvino and a brief flat section, the finish is set in Bergamo’s Upper Town.

Gran Fondo Il Lombardia: An Event for All

The weekend also features the Gran Fondo Il Lombardia Felice Gimondi Würth Modyf on Sunday 12 October, based in Cantù and open to amateur riders. The course rolls out from Cantù toward Maglio before a tough 7 km climb to the Sormano hill, including the Muro di Sormano with gradients reaching 27%. A descent to Nesso precedes the second major test, the Ghisallo, a steadier 9 km ascent at an average of 6.2% that tops out by the sanctuary. From there, participants face a long descent to Merone and a final 20 km of rolling terrain back to the finish in Cantù.

Il Lombardia not only showcases elite cycling but also invites amateur cyclists to experience the thrill of this iconic race. The combination of challenging climbs and scenic views makes both events a highlight of the cycling calendar. Riders will be treated to breathtaking vistas of Lake Como, steep ascents, and the vibrant atmosphere of the Italian autumn. As the season winds down, this event is a must-attend for cycling enthusiasts looking to end the year on a high note.

Mark your calendars for this exciting weekend in October and prepare to witness some of the best cyclists in the world tackle one of the most challenging routes in professional cycling. Whether you are a seasoned pro or a casual rider, the Gran Fondo promises a memorable experience filled with camaraderie and the spirit of competition.
