After advancing through Wimbledon qualifying this year, Michael Zheng took a behind-the-scenes tour of the All England Club and briefly visited Centre Court. He assumed that might be his only look at the sport’s most storied stage. Days later, he was back there as a competitor, reaching the third round and facing third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime. Although he lost in straight sets, the appearance marked a milestone in a breakthrough season.
Michael Zheng’s Remarkable Rise in Tennis
The 22-year-old Columbia University graduate entered the ATP Top 100 for the first time this week, climbing to a career-high No. 88. His rise has been driven by consistent results at the biggest events: a third-round run at Wimbledon, another at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati, and the same stage at the US Open, where he competed as a wild card.
Zheng has been especially sharp in qualifying. He won all 12 of his qualifying matches this season, battling through the preliminary rounds at the Australian Open, Roland Garros, and Wimbledon, as well as in Montreal and Cincinnati. In Melbourne, he saved a match point against Lukas Klein to secure his place in the main draw, then defeated former World No. 15 Sebastian Korda in five sets in his Grand Slam main-draw debut.
While classmates were walking at commencement in May, Zheng was competing at Roland Garros. He graduated from Columbia with a degree in psychology and is one of 14 Americans currently ranked inside the Top 100.
