Alex de Minaur withdraws from the China Open final against Djokovic due to injury

Alex de Minaur faced a challenging setback during the China Open final in Beijing on Tuesday, where he was forced to retire due to a groin problem. The Australian tennis star developed discomfort during the first set against world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, leading to an early exit from the match.

Injury Concerns and Future Plans

The match began competitively, with de Minaur dropping the first set in a tiebreak. However, as the second set commenced, he reported discomfort in his adductor muscle, prompting him to stop the match. The exact nature and extent of the injury remain unclear, but de Minaur plans to have medical scans in Shanghai to assess his condition. He is still entered in the Shanghai Masters, which starts Wednesday, and is set to face either qualifier Federico Cina or Alex Molcan in his opening match.

This season has seen de Minaur compile a record of 40 wins and 19 losses. He achieved his 11th ATP title earlier this year in Rotterdam and reached the finals in ’s-Hertogenbosch. Currently positioned 10th in the ATP Live Race to Turin, de Minaur is aiming for a third consecutive appearance at the prestigious season-ending Finals.

Despite the disappointment of retiring from the final, de Minaur remains optimistic. He characterized his week in Beijing as largely encouraging, highlighting that the level of play he demonstrated gives him confidence for the upcoming matches. His resilience and determination to overcome this injury will be key as he prepares for the challenges ahead.

As fans eagerly await updates on his condition, de Minaur’s journey in the Shanghai Masters will be closely followed. The young talent has shown remarkable potential this season, and supporters are hopeful he can bounce back quickly and continue to compete at a high level.
