Djokovic regains form with China Open win and boosts ATP Finals chances

Novak Djokovic reignited his season in Beijing, lifting the China Open trophy to strengthen his push for a place at the Nitto ATP Finals. The 39-year-old extended his spotless record in the Chinese capital to 34 wins without a loss and secured a seventh title at the ATP 500 event, moving up six places to ninth in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin with 2,840 points. The victory also marked the 102nd tour-level title of his career and came after a difficult North American hard-court stretch.

Beijing Open Highlights: A Closer Look at the Rising Stars

Alex de Minaur climbed two spots to 10th in the Live Race on 2,690 points after reaching the Beijing final, where he retired following the opening set. The run gave the Australian his 22nd tour-level championship match appearance and put him within 150 points of Djokovic as he chases a third straight appearance at the year-end event.

Rafael Jodar and Taylor Fritz occupy 11th and 12th, respectively, after both fell in the first round in Tokyo. They turn to Shanghai aiming to regain ground, with Jodar, 20, targeting a debut in Turin and Fritz, a former runner-up at the season finale, seeking a late surge.

Jakub Mensik (13th), Tommy Paul (14th), and Felix Auger-Aliassime (15th) are also eyeing valuable points in Shanghai, the penultimate ATP Masters 1000 tournament of the season.

As of Wednesday, 7 October, Alexander Zverev leads the Live Race with 8,650 points and has qualified for Turin. Jannik Sinner sits second on 7,950 but is out for the remainder of 2026. Carlos Alcaraz is third on 4,560 and has also booked his place. Ben Shelton (4th) and Flavio Cobolli (5th) follow, with Frances Tiafoe (6th), Arthur Fils (7th), and Daniil Medvedev (8th) rounding out the top eight ahead of Djokovic (9th) and de Minaur (10th).
