Former world No. 11 Alizé Cornet has officially announced her retirement from professional tennis for a second time, concluding her career just months after a brief return to competition.
Career Highlights of Alizé Cornet
Cornet initially stepped away from the sport following her 20th appearance at the French Open in 2024. However, she made a comeback in April at a WTA 125 event in La Bisbal d’Empordà, Spain. During her return, the 35-year-old athlete recorded a 4–6 match record, participating in lower-tier tournaments and qualifying draws. Notably, she won two qualifying matches at Wimbledon but fell short in the third round, losing to Elsa Jacquemot. Her final match took place earlier this month in San Sebastián, where she was defeated 6–3, 6–2 by Tamara Korpatsch.
Throughout her impressive two-decade career, which began with a Grand Slam debut at the 2005 French Open at the young age of 15, Cornet reached a peak ranking of No. 11 and secured six singles titles in cities such as Budapest, Bad Gastein, Strasbourg, Katowice, Hobart, and Gstaad. She ended her career with a notable singles record of 549–463 and also added three doubles titles to her accomplishments.
Cornet achieved 25 victories over Top 10 opponents, showcasing her talent and determination on the court. Her resume includes three remarkable wins against world No. 1 Serena Williams in 2014, as well as triumphs over Agnieszka Radwanska (then No. 3) in 2014 and Simona Halep (then No. 2) in 2015. In 2022, she also secured victories over Garbiñe Muguruza (then No. 3) and Iga Swiatek (then No. 1), with her win against Swiatek at Wimbledon snapping a remarkable 37-match winning streak for the eventual six-time major champion.
Additionally, Cornet played a crucial role in France’s Fed Cup title run in 2019 and reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in 2022. Tennis officials and fans alike have praised her for her consistency, dedication, and the positive impact she had on the sport. Cornet expressed that her final match in San Sebastián felt like a definitive close to her playing chapter and a promising opportunity to embark on new ventures.
