Botswana has wrapped up its 2026 National Team Selection Finals, a multi-phase championship that brought together the country’s leading players under regulations aligned with the African Chess Confederation and FIDE.

Highlights from the National Team Selection Finals

Staged at Yarona Country Lodge, the event used a round-robin format in both the Open and Women’s sections, with every player meeting all others in their group. The competition unfolded across several stages, testing consistency, stamina, and focus.

In the Open section, Mothudi Arnold Mogotsi topped the field after a steady, well-managed campaign. He will be joined on the national team by Sebetlela Gaasite, CM Thuto Mpene, and CM Thuso Mosutha, whose strong showings highlighted the impact of Botswana’s youth development pathway. The squad also includes IM Providence Oatlhotse, the country’s highest-rated player, adding experience and depth.

In the Women’s section, WIM Onkemetse Mendu Francis secured her place with a solid performance. She will line up alongside WCM Maya Otimile, WCM Amolemo Atlang Mosweu, and WCM Laone Phoebe Moshoboro, reflecting steady growth in the women’s game nationally. WFM Natalie Banda, Botswana’s top-rated female player, completes the team.

The federation described the championship as a confirmation of a transparent, merit-based selection system and a clear route from youth development to elite representation, blending seasoned masters with emerging talent.

The selected teams are set to represent Botswana at the 2026 Chess Olympiad in Uzbekistan. Botswana will also host the African Individual Chess Championship in June 2026, underscoring the country’s growing role in continental chess.
