The European Individual Chess Championship has begun in Katowice, Poland, bringing together a record 501 players for two weeks of intense competition. This prestigious event features participants from 43 European federations, all vying for glory in 11 rounds with a €100,000 prize fund and qualification spots for the upcoming FIDE World Chess Cup.
Opening Ceremony Highlights
The tournament kicked off with an impressive opening ceremony, showcasing the anthems of the European Chess Union (ECU) and Poland. Notable attendees included ECU President Zurab Azmaiparashvili, Katowice Mayor Marcin Krupa, Polish Chess Federation President Radoslaw Jedynak, ECU Vice Presidents Gunnar Bjornsson and Alojzije Jankovic, FIDE Secretary General Lukasz Turlej, Silesian Chess Association President Michal Pazdziora, and Adam Mokrysz of MOKATE, among other distinguished guests.
During the ceremony, speakers welcomed the participants, expressed gratitude to the organizers, and emphasized the championship’s significance for the growth of European chess. The excitement reached its peak when the mayor and the ECU president made the ceremonial first move on the top board in the match between grandmasters Igor Kovalenko and Reinis Paikens.
As the first round commenced, most of the top seeds emerged victorious, although several noteworthy draws took place. GM David Navara (CZE, 2643) shared the point with Yehonatan Azoulay (ISR, 2298) while playing Black. Similarly, GM Maxime Lagarde (FRA, 2621) settled for a draw against David Martirosyan (CZE, 2281). Another interesting matchup saw GM Daniil Yuffa (ESP, 2595) draw with White against Daniil Yasmo (GER, 2271). Furthermore, GM Constantin Lupulescu (ROU, 2587) was held to a draw by WIM Manon Schippke (FRA, 2269).
