Jonathan Toews makes strong comeback with goal in Jets’ win over Flames after 921-day wait

Jonathan Toews scored his first goal in more than two years to help the Winnipeg Jets beat the Calgary Flames 2-1 at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Monday, extending Winnipeg’s winning streak to five games.

The Winnipeg native tied the game 1-1 on a power play at 2:41 of the third period by deflecting a point shot from Neal Pionk. It was his first goal since April 13, 2023, a span of 921 days.

Game Highlights and Player Performances

Mark Scheifele netted the winner at 15:06 of the third, taking a feed from Kyle Connor as he drove to the net and lifting a shot past Dustin Wolf’s left pad. Scheifele pushed his season-opening point streak to six games (10 points: seven goals, three assists) and his goal streak to five. Connor Hellebuyck finished with 32 saves for Winnipeg (5-1-0); Wolf made 26 stops for Calgary (1-6-0).

Rasmus Andersson opened the scoring for the Flames at 13:22 of the second period with a shot through traffic, aided by a screen from Ryan Lomberg. Calgary had a late power play and pulled the goalie for an extra skater but could not force overtime.

Toews said he had focused on staying ready for his chance and felt the goal was a confidence boost. Scheifele credited his teammates for his strong start. Flames coach Ryan Huska stressed that frustration won’t help and the group needs to rally and respond. Andersson acknowledged the disappointment of losing the lead but pointed to an improved full-game effort.

Notes: Scheifele recorded the third five-game goal streak of his career and tied Patrik Laine for the second-most such streaks in Jets/Thrashers history, trailing only Ilya Kovalchuk (five). Jets defenseman Josh Morrissey assisted on Scheifele’s goal and passed Dustin Byfuglien (294) for the most assists by a defenseman in franchise history. Andersson scored his 49th career goal, moving past TJ Brodie (48) for eighth-most by a Flames defenseman.
