Tadej Pogačar has etched his name in cycling history by winning Il Lombardia for the fifth time in 2025, matching the legendary Fausto Coppi’s all-time record. The Slovenian cyclist showcased his exceptional skills by decisively accelerating on the Passo di Ganda, riding solo to the finish line in Bergamo. Close behind him, Remco Evenepoel secured second place, while Michael Storer finished in third.
Pogačar’s Remarkable Achievements in 2025
This victory marks Pogačar’s 20th win of the season, following an impressive tally of 25 wins last year. With this win, he now boasts a total of 10 Monument classics, with half of these victories coming from Il Lombardia alone. His triumph in 2025 is his third Monument win this year, a remarkable achievement that aligns him with cycling great Eddy Merckx, who accomplished this feat in 1969, 1971, 1972, and 1975.
Pogačar has also made history by being the first rider to win Il Lombardia twice while donning the world champion’s jersey. Additionally, he is the only cyclist to have completed the Tour de France–Il Lombardia double in the same season three times, achieving this rare feat in 2021, 2024, and now 2025.
Since making his debut on the Il Lombardia podium in 2021, Pogačar has consistently claimed the top step. His last 15 victories in one-day races have all been secured through impressive solo moves, demonstrating his unrivaled talent and determination. The most recent one-day win prior to this streak was the 2023 Flèche Wallonne, where he outpaced competitors Mattias Skjelmose and Mikel Landa.
At just 27 years and 20 days old, Pogačar has already amassed 10 Monument titles, a record only surpassed by Merckx, who had 12 at the same age. Merckx went on to achieve 15 Monument wins before turning 28. As Pogačar continues to dominate the cycling scene, fans and analysts alike are eager to see if he can reach or even exceed these legendary numbers in the coming years.
