The Giro d’Italia generates economic growth and promotes social values in Italy

A forum examining the Giro d’Italia’s economic footprint and social benefits will take place in Trento as part of the eighth Il Festival dello Sport. Organized by RCS Sports & Events with the support of ICE – the Italian Trade & Investment Agency, within a festival run by La Gazzetta dello Sport and Trentino Marketing, the session will present new research on the race’s impact and on sustainable mobility.

The Impact of Giro d’Italia on Economy and Society

The event will be moderated by Pier Bergonzi, director of Sportweek and senior writer at La Gazzetta dello Sport. Findings from the Banca IFIS Research Office conducted during the most recent Giro indicate the race continues to act as a significant economic driver, generating an estimated €2.1 million in direct and indirect impact. The studies also highlight benefits for public wellbeing, greater participation in physical activity, the spread of sustainable practices, improved environmental health, and support for social initiatives and fundraising efforts. The research further describes the Giro as a form of soft power that helps strengthen international relations and promotes abroad the Italian values of inclusion and cooperation, contributing to the host country’s global profile.

Another report to be unveiled, titled E-bike: The Engine of Sustainable Mobility Made in Italy, explores the strength and international outlook of Italy’s e-bike industry. The project was promoted by MAECI, MOST, and the University of Bergamo.

A discussion will follow with representatives from the organizing bodies, institutions, and the Italian bike economy, alongside former and current cycling champions, including Maurizio Fondriest and Giacomo Nizzolo, who will comment on the findings.

The forum is scheduled in Trento on Friday, 10 October, starting at 10:30 a.m., with live streaming available. This event aims to shed light on the socio-economic advantages of cycling events like the Giro d’Italia, reinforcing the importance of sports in driving community development and promoting sustainable practices.
