Zdeno Chara Returns to Boston Bruins as Hockey Operations Adviser

BOSTON — Zdeno Chara has rejoined the Boston Bruins as a hockey operations adviser and mentor, returning to the organization he captained to the 2011 Stanley Cup. The retired defenseman will work with players and staff as a connector between the locker room and the coaching group, with a particular focus on the off-ice development of defensemen. He is expected to be a regular presence at practices and home games.

Chara retired after the 2021-22 season. He left the Bruins following the 2019-20 campaign and played one season each with the Washington Capitals and New York Islanders before ending his playing career. Over 14 seasons in Boston from 2006 to 2020, he appeared in 1,023 games and recorded 481 points (148 goals, 333 assists), ranking third among Bruins defensemen all-time in goals, assists, and points.

Impact on Player Development and Leadership

Current Bruins figures are welcoming the move. First-year coach Marco Sturm, who played alongside Chara in Boston from 2006 to 2010, sees his former teammate’s standards and daily approach as a way to reinforce accountability and add another respected voice in the room for star players and younger teammates alike.

Chara’s influence on David Pastrnak and Charlie McAvoy predates this role. Pastrnak, who arrived as a first-round pick in 2014, was quickly put at ease by the veteran captain, and McAvoy formed a notable defense pairing with Chara early in his career. Both are expected to lean on him as the team evolves.

His return also addresses a leadership gap. After Brad Marchand was traded before the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline, the Bruins have been operating without a captain. Pastrnak and McAvoy are sharing those responsibilities, and Chara is set to support their growth with guidance drawn from his years as a leader.

Chara spent last season around the team in an informal capacity, attending meetings and engaging with players to determine how he could best contribute. With his duties now formalized, he intends to emphasize clear communication and alignment between players and coaches to help the club maximize its performance.

The timing aligns with a milestone year for Chara, who is set to enter the Hockey Hall of Fame. As the Bruins transition from one core to the next, the organization is counting on his experience, presence, and familiarity with the team’s culture to aid that shift.
