Per Renstrom, a trailblazer in sports medicine and a key architect of player care on the ATP Tour, died on 20 March in Stockholm. His contributions to the field have set a standard that continues to influence the way athletes receive medical care today.

Impact on ATP Medical Services

Renstrom helped build the foundation of ATP Medical Services as part of the original committee that shaped the program. Working alongside David Altchek, he set the standards and developed a worldwide network of tournament physicians that still underpins the Tour’s medical operations. This network has been crucial for ensuring that players receive high-quality medical attention during events, enhancing their performance and safety.

An internationally recognized orthopaedic surgeon, Renstrom drove improvements to medical support across ATP events and spent many years as team physician for Sweden’s Davis Cup squad. His influence also reached beyond the Tour through more than two decades of service on the ITF Sports Medicine and Science Committee, where he represented the ATP from 1998 to 2019. His expertise and dedication to player health were instrumental in advancing sports medicine practices globally.

Colleagues and players regarded him for combining rigorous science with steady, humane care, making him a trusted figure during demanding moments in elite competition. Renstrom’s ability to connect with athletes on a personal level while providing top-notch medical advice is a testament to his character and professionalism.

His contributions were honored with the creation of the Per Renstrom Award for Excellence in Tennis Medicine & Science in 2025, with Renstrom named the first recipient. This award recognizes outstanding achievements in the field of tennis medicine, ensuring that his legacy will inspire future generations of sports medicine professionals. He was also inducted into the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine Hall of Fame, further solidifying his impact on the industry.

Away from his professional roles, Renstrom shared a deep passion for tennis with his son, Marten Renstrom, a former ATP Tour player. This familial connection to the sport exemplifies the love and commitment that defined Renstrom’s life.

Renstrom leaves a lasting legacy that will continue to shape how players are cared for at every level of the sport. His pioneering work in sports medicine will not be forgotten, as it has laid the groundwork for the future of athlete care. The principles he instilled in the medical community will resonate for years to come, ensuring that the health and well-being of players remain a top priority.
