Michael Valgren triumphs with a dramatic victory on stage 17 of the Giro d’Italia in Andalo

Michael Valgren seized Stage 17 of the 2026 Giro d’Italia in Andalo with a late burst just before the final kilometer marker, sealing the win from a breakaway and lifting his son’s green Poké Ball as he crossed the line. Andreas Leknessund finished second for the third time in this edition, and Damiano Caruso took third, climbing back into the overall top 10 and becoming the oldest rider since Gino Bartali in 1954 to reach a Giro stage podium.

The Thrilling Race Dynamics

Fatigue was evident after more than two weeks of racing, yet the day opened at a blistering pace, averaging 53.3 km/h in the first hour. A 29-rider break finally formed between the Passo dei Tre Termini and the Cocca di Lodrino, featuring Valgren, Rémi Cavagna, Enric Mas, Juanpe López, Einer Rubio, Lorenzo Milesi, Aleksandr Vlasov, Jhonatan Narváez, Andreas Leknessund, Damiano Caruso, Giulio Ciccone, and others. The overall contenders let the move go, leaving the stage to the escapees.

Cavagna attacked alone with 117 km remaining and stayed away until 58 km to go, when he was reeled in near the intermediate sprint at Roncone. Narváez collected maximum points there, enough to put him back in the virtual lead of the points classification. From that moment, cooperation at the front collapsed as surges on the rolling approach to Andalo thinned the group.

Eight riders ultimately remained in contention: Caruso, Valgren, López, Rubio, Vlasov, Gianmarco Garofoli, Igor Arrieta, and Leknessund. On the timed ascent to Andalo-Lever, Rubio and Valgren looked the strongest, but the Colombian could not dislodge the Dane. With 2 km left, Caruso, Leknessund, Vlasov, and Arrieta rejoined. Caruso tried to open the sprint early, yet Valgren struck decisively just before the red kite and held on to win. The Dane adds this triumph to a résumé that includes major one-day victories and a World Championship bronze.

It is Valgren’s second victory of the season after his success in Mombaroccio at Tirreno–Adriatico. Denmark’s run at the Giro also continued: across the 2025 and 2026 editions, Danish riders have now collected 10 stage wins, credited to Mads Pedersen (4), Kasper Asgreen (1), Jonas Vingegaard (4), and Valgren (1).
