Davidovich Fokina chasing his first ATP title despite five lost finals

file-298

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina heads into the Roland Garros second round on Wednesday against Thiago Agustin Tirante with one of the tour’s strangest profiles: a regular presence near the top of the game who is still chasing a first ATP Tour title.

The Spaniard sits at No. 23 in the ATP Rankings and has been as high as No. 14. He plays the biggest events, owns wins over leading names and thrives on major stages, yet his trophy shelf remains empty. He is currently the highest-ranked man without a tour-level singles crown.

Davidovich Fokina’s Search for His First Title

Davidovich Fokina has fallen at the final hurdle five times: Monte Carlo in 2022, and Basel, Washington, Acapulco, and Delray Beach in 2025. His run in Monte Carlo included a victory over Novak Djokovic before he lost the championship match to Stefanos Tsitsipas. Across his career, he has compiled a 171–155 record in tour-level singles.

At 26, the Malaga native has checked almost every box that typically precedes a breakthrough. He brings heavy forehands, quick movement that turns defense into offense, a steady backhand, a deft drop shot, and the athleticism to unsettle opponents. The missing piece is closing out a final.

Converting that last step is often as much mental as physical. Title matches amplify pressure and shrink margins, and his high-energy, creative approach must be carefully managed when precision is required. This is a common theme among players who are on the cusp of greatness but have yet to secure that elusive first title.

Spain has produced champions of many types, and Davidovich Fokina has carved out his own niche as a consistent threat who has yet to seal the deal. If he lands a first title, more may well follow. For now, the hunt continues in Paris as he aims to transform his potential into success on the ATP Tour.
