FC Copenhagen hires Kristjaan Speakman as the new Director of Football

F.C. Copenhagen has appointed Kristjaan Speakman as Director of Football, with his first day set for July 1. The 47-year-old Briton will take overall charge of all sporting departments at the club, covering the first team, the academy, the women’s team, and FC Rosengård 1917.

Strategic Vision for F.C. Copenhagen

Speakman has set two clear horizons. In the short term, he aims to support head coach Bo Svensson and the sporting staff in building a first-team squad targeted at UEFA Conference League qualification and a push for the Danish championship. Over the longer term, he plans to lead a strategic roadmap designed to strengthen the club’s position across every team and function.

He frames the role around continually developing and improving all sporting operations to bring trophies back to Copenhagen. The ambitions remain high, but he believes the approach must evolve to secure lasting success. He also sees a broader transformation ahead, emphasizing that processes, ambitions, identity, and strategy must all align.

Known for a holistic outlook, Speakman places strong emphasis on off-field structures that create high-performance environments. He intends to pair a strong professional culture with modern methods and a more data-driven setup, using data to sharpen decision-making, track development, and spot opportunities earlier—aiming to keep F.C. Copenhagen leading on and off the pitch.

Speakman holds a degree in Business Management, the FA Technical Directors License, and the UEFA Pro Licence. His professional career began in 2000 as an academy coach at Derby County. He moved to Birmingham City in 2006, became academy manager in 2010, and academy director in 2017, helping build one of England’s most respected youth programs. In 2020, he joined Sunderland, where a unified, data-integrated structure under his leadership helped the club climb from League One to the Premier League in just over four seasons.

He will relocate to Copenhagen, with his wife and two children expected to join him later in the summer. With Speakman at the helm, F.C. Copenhagen looks poised for a promising future filled with potential growth and achievement in both domestic and international competitions.
