DBU brings together island mayors to strengthen communities through football on Danish islands

The Danish Football Association (DBU) and its regional branches, Jutland and Funen, have initiated a collaborative effort to enhance the wellbeing of Denmark’s island municipalities. This initiative stems from a recent meeting held on Læsø, where discussions centered around the role of football and volunteer organizations in fostering stronger local communities and improving quality of life.

Strengthening Community Through Football

The impetus for this initiative arose from prior discussions with the mayor of Ærø, highlighting shared challenges and opportunities among the islands. This conversation paved the way for a broader dialogue with various municipal leaders, including mayors and directors from Fanø, Samsø, Læsø, and Ærø. The focus was on how football clubs, associations, and volunteer groups can contribute to creating attractive and vibrant living environments.

During the meeting on Læsø, representatives from DBU, DBU Jylland, and DBU Fyn elaborated on strategies for leveraging football to support community wellbeing, social cohesion, and public health. The leaders expressed enthusiasm about these proposals, and all parties agreed to map out potential pathways for enhanced collaboration moving forward.

DBU and its regional branches are committed to supporting a diverse array of community organizations on the islands. This includes not only football clubs but also various other groups that rely on the dedication of local volunteers to drive activities and promote community engagement. This initiative is an extension of DBU’s vision to be part of a larger community framework, encapsulated in the concept of Denmark’s Clubhouse, which aims to transform clubs into community hubs for wider public benefit.

This collaborative effort aligns with strategic priorities set by DBU’s representative assembly for 2026. Key focus areas include further development of the Denmark’s Clubhouse model, reinforcing the connections between football, civil society, and local communities across the nation, and particularly emphasizing the unique needs of island municipalities.

Notable attendees of the Læsø meeting included DBU chair Jesper Møller, DBU Jylland chair Ole Ladefoged, DBU Fyn chair Bjarne Christensen, and Metin Dincer, head of DBU Welfare Alliances. The dialogue initiated at this meeting will continue with each municipality as DBU, along with its regional branches, seeks to address local needs and enhance cooperation around associations, wellbeing, and community life on the islands.
