Arthur Fils is into his first ATP Masters 1000 final after defeating Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 6-4 at the Cincinnati Open. The 22-year-old Frenchman will play either Frances Tiafoe or Brandon Nakashima for the title in Ohio.
Fils Shines in Cincinnati Open Semifinal
The semifinal began after a weather interruption of about 45 minutes during the initial warmup. Once play got underway, Fils needed only 68 minutes to close out a largely one-way contest. He recovered quickly from an early break of serve in the third game, controlled the baseline exchanges, and finished stronger in both sets.
Fils dominated behind his first delivery, winning 82% of those points (27 of 33), and converted three of four break chances. This victory moved him to 3-0 in his head-to-head with Cobolli, showcasing his impressive form in this tournament.
With this run, Fils becomes only the second player born in 2004 or later to reach a Masters 1000 final, following Jakub Mensik’s breakthrough in Miami in 2025. His season record now stands at 31-10, and he has climbed 10 places to No. 11 in the ATP Live Rankings. Although he cannot rise further this week even with the trophy, he is well positioned to push for a Top 10 debut at the US Open, where he did not compete last year and therefore has no ranking points to defend.
Cobolli, despite the defeat, is set to achieve a new milestone by rising to a career-high No. 6 in the ATP Rankings on Monday, reflecting the competitiveness of the current tennis landscape.
Fils mentioned that he started slowly and felt the occasion early, but a surge late in the first set shifted the momentum. He noted that his serve improved as the match wore on and that he managed the delay and changing conditions effectively. This adaptability may serve him well as he prepares for the final, where he will seek to claim his first ATP Masters 1000 title.
