Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca defeats Djokovic in dramatic Roland Garros match

Joao Fonseca staged a stunning comeback at Roland Garros on Friday, overturning a two-set deficit to defeat Novak Djokovic in the third round. The 19-year-old Brazilian won 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 in four hours and 53 minutes, becoming the first teenager to beat the 24-time Grand Slam champion at a major.

Djokovic, 39, looked in control after taking the opening two sets, but Fonseca shifted the momentum in the third and clung on in the fourth. Serving at 3-4, 15/40 in the fourth set, the No. 28 seed saved two break points, then surged to force a decider. Although Djokovic appeared to struggle physically between points at times, he still moved ahead 3-1 in the fifth before Fonseca rallied again, winning six of the last eight games to close out the upset under the Court Philippe-Chatrier lights.

Match Highlights and Statistics

The result added to a tumultuous 48 hours in Paris, coming a day after Jannik Sinner’s surprise defeat to Juan Manuel Cerundolo, and further opened up an already unpredictable men’s draw.

Match statistics showed Fonseca finished with two fewer winners than Djokovic, 68 to 70, and committed nine more unforced errors, 47 to 39. His timing in the crucial moments proved decisive, particularly in the final game when, after facing a break point while serving for the match, he sealed victory with three consecutive aces.

This was Fonseca’s second career win over a Top 10 opponent, following his upset of Andrey Rublev at the 2025 Australian Open. It also marked only the second time Djokovic has lost a Grand Slam match after leading by two sets, the other coming at Roland Garros in 2010.

Into the fourth round of a major for the first time, Fonseca will face either No. 15 seed Casper Ruud or No. 24 seed Tommy Paul for a place in the quarterfinals. This victory not only boosts Fonseca’s confidence but also establishes him as a formidable player to watch in future tournaments.
