Daniel Merida secured his first ATP Tour title at the Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag, defeating Damir Dzumhur with a score of 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 in an exhilarating final match. At just 21 years old, the Spaniard has become the third-youngest champion in Umag this decade, following in the footsteps of tennis stars Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.
Match Highlights and Performance
Merida showcased his talent by racing through the opening set in a swift 28 minutes. He later served for the championship at 5-4 in the second set, but Dzumhur made a remarkable comeback from triple break point down, sweeping three straight games to even the match and force a deciding set. However, Merida regained his composure in the third set and closed out the victory after one hour and 59 minutes, relying on his heavy baseline hitting and effectively managing late-match nerves.
This title marks a significant achievement for Merida, who competed in just his seventh tour-level event. His impressive season already included a runner-up finish in Bucharest, and with this victory, he is projected to rise to No. 58 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, setting a new career high. He also becomes the eighth first-time champion on the ATP Tour this year. The Umag tournament has recently gained a reputation as a launching pad for young winners, with Alcaraz lifting his first tour trophy there in 2021 and Sinner defeating Alcaraz in the 2022 final.
On the other hand, Dzumhur, 34, was aiming for his fourth ATP title and his first since 2018. His journey to the final included a grueling three-hour, 42-minute quarterfinal against Matteo Arnaldi and a two-hour, 44-minute semifinal against Alex Molcan, showcasing his endurance and fighting spirit.
After the match, Merida reflected on the turbulent contest, noting the slowing conditions in the second set and the nerves he had to overcome. He expressed satisfaction with his performance throughout the week and views joining recent Umag winners as a source of motivation to continue closing the gap on the tour’s elite. This victory not only solidifies his presence on the ATP Tour but also sets the stage for an exciting future in professional tennis.
