Danish Players Face Challenges at the FIDE World Cadets Cup in Georgia

The FIDE World Cadets Cup concluded on Saturday, 27 June, with a vibrant closing ceremony held in Batumi, Georgia. Asian teams, particularly from China, India, and Kazakhstan, dominated the medal table, securing the majority of the podium positions. Notably, France’s Mark Llari emerged victorious, capturing the gold medal in the Open U12 section, marking the only European triumph at this prestigious event.

Denmark’s Performance and Future Prospects

For Denmark, the tournament highlighted the ongoing challenge of competing against the world’s youth elite. One significant aspect of the event was the impressive performances from unrated players, especially in the Girls U8 and Open U8 categories, where Chinese competitors claimed gold and silver medals, as well as a bronze in the Open U8. Unfortunately, none of the Danish participants were able to meet their pre-tournament seedings.

The top finish for Denmark came from Ekalaivan Ramanathan, who made a remarkable comeback after a sluggish start, scoring just one point in the first four rounds. He finished strong with six points, landing in 50th place, which is promising for his international debut. Meanwhile, Emil Bertl-Eberle and Isabella Chen faced challenges in maintaining their early momentum, experiencing several close losses. However, both managed to achieve notable victories in round 10, which the delegation emphasized as highlights of their performance.

As the team returns home, they face the likelihood of a dip in their ratings, but they also bring back invaluable experience gained through competitive games and off-board activities. From enjoying local excursions, such as a dolphin show, to relaxing by the Black Sea, the young players had enriching experiences that go beyond chess. They have returned with a clearer understanding of what areas they need to improve upon for future tournaments, setting the stage for their development in the sport.
