Esbjerg fB has taken a significant step to enhance its medical department by appointing 43-year-old Morten Bastholm as Head of Player Health & Sports Medicine ahead of the upcoming season. Bastholm, who previously worked at Esbjerg from 2021 to 2022, returns to the club after a stint at Superliga side Sønderjyske Fodbold. In his new role, he will be responsible for overseeing the treatment team for both the first team and the academy.

Enhancing Player Health and Performance

In this key position, Bastholm will lead initiatives focused on players’ physical health, injury prevention, rehabilitation, and daily treatments. His collaboration with the wider staff is aimed at maximizing player availability and enhancing on-field performance. Bastholm’s extensive experience is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the club’s medical strategies.

During his tenure at Sønderjyske, Bastholm was instrumental in building a robust medical setup, demonstrating his commitment to player welfare. Additionally, he has been a long-serving member of the Danish Football Association’s staff, serving as a physiotherapist for the women’s national team, a role he will continue alongside his responsibilities at Esbjerg fB.

EfB’s sporting director, Sebastian Brydegaard, views the hiring of Bastholm as a pivotal addition to the club. His expertise and familiarity with Esbjerg fB are seen as crucial elements in a broader strategy to enhance health, prevention, and rehabilitation for the squad. This aligns with the club’s objective of fostering a culture of wellness and resilience among players.

The club also highlighted its long-standing partnership with EmCare Sundhed, expressing appreciation for their contributions. However, the decision to bring Bastholm in-house is aimed at providing greater control over the medical staff and enhancing flexibility in daily operations. This strategic move is designed to create a more integrated approach to player health.

Bastholm is committed to contributing to an evidence-based medical setup focused on prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation, ensuring that players can reach their peak performance levels. He regards his appointment at Esbjerg fB as a significant next step in his career after rewarding years at Sønderjyske. With his leadership, the club aims to cultivate a healthier and more capable squad for the challenges ahead.
