FC Midtjylland is seeking an apprentice for a unique groundsman apprenticeship at the new hybrid pitches in Ikast

FC Midtjylland is excited to announce the recruitment of a groundsman apprentice as it gears up to open two state-of-the-art hybrid football pitches at Dream 99 in Ikast this August. This apprenticeship offers a unique opportunity for individuals passionate about sports turf management to learn the intricacies of creating and maintaining elite playing surfaces.

Apprenticeship Details and Responsibilities

The successful apprentice will join a dedicated pitch-care team led by head groundsman Morten Sylvestersen. This role is designed to provide comprehensive training in various aspects of groundskeeping, including how hybrid pitches are constructed, maintained, and kept in top condition for matches.

The apprenticeship pathway can begin through the Greenkeeper/Groundsman basic course or as an in-house apprenticeship directly with FC Midtjylland. The program is structured to alternate between school periods and practical field training, with a duration of up to three and a half years. Apprentices will gain hands-on experience while working closely with experienced grounds staff.

Key responsibilities for the groundsman apprentice include:

  • Daily care of the new hybrid pitches and surrounding grass areas
  • Mowing, fertilizing, aerating, watering, and seeding
  • Maintaining machinery and equipment
  • Preparing surfaces for training sessions and practice matches

As the apprentice’s skills develop, they will be given increasing independence in their work. It is important to note that working hours may occasionally extend beyond standard daytime hours, including weekends, to ensure the pitches are in optimal condition.

To qualify for this apprenticeship, applicants must have completed the 9th grade and should enjoy hands-on work. They must be comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions and demonstrate a readiness to assist when necessary. The ability to work both independently and as part of a team is crucial, along with a strong motivation to learn throughout the program. While a driving license for a car or tractor is advantageous, it is not mandatory.

FC Midtjylland offers immediate responsibility for two high-quality hybrid pitches, alongside close day-to-day mentorship from the head groundsman. Apprentices will receive pay during their training under the relevant collective agreement, and they can expect a supportive and informal workplace with dedicated colleagues.

Applications for this exciting opportunity are due by 31 July 2026. FC Midtjylland encourages applications from all qualified candidates, regardless of gender, age, or ethnic background. For additional inquiries about the role, interested candidates are welcome to reach out to the head groundsman.
