FC Midtjylland strengthens analysis department with new leadership and the appointment of Nichlas Knudsen

FC Midtjylland is reshaping its analysis setup to create a clearer, more unified approach to methodology and playing style across the club. The move follows a season that brought a second-place finish in the 3F Superliga, a Danish Cup win, and the best European campaign in the club’s history.

New Leadership in Analysis and Methodology

As part of the changes, first-team lead analyst Søren Bjerg steps into a new position as Head of Methodology and Playing Style within The Football Collective. He will oversee a consistent football framework across the organization, from the academy and the Superliga squad to Mafra, and will continue to have some involvement with the first team.

Bjerg began at the club as an under-15 coach, helping launch Herning Elite and working with the 1997 age group, which included Rasmus Nissen Kristensen. He later coached at the academy, then moved into a transition role linked to the first team. In 2017, he also took on analyst duties. What started as a one-person function has since grown into a first-team setup that now includes three analysts, a set-piece specialist, and two data-focused staff members. Over nearly a decade, he has worked with eight head coaches, been part of seven podium finishes, and helped build an analysis department he says has earned recognition beyond Denmark. He describes the club’s football strategy as clear and believes the organization is well positioned, with defined ways to measure training and playing style and strong staff across departments.

Alongside Bjerg’s new role, 33-year-old Nichlas Knudsen joins as a first-team analyst. He most recently held a similar position at Egyptian club Al Ahly under former FCM head coach Jess Thorup, and has previous experience with AaB, Denmark’s women’s national team, and AGF Women. Knudsen aims to bring fresh perspectives to an established, high-quality setup rather than make sweeping changes.

These strategic changes at FC Midtjylland signal a commitment to improving their performance and establishing a robust analytical framework that can enhance player development and team cohesion. As they continue to build on their successes, the club is poised to make a significant impact in both domestic and international competitions.
