FC Midtjylland’s U17s head into the new season after a pre-season that unfolded as planned, with coaches and players describing a group ready for both development and challenges.
Building Team Culture and Identity
Over three intensive weeks, the squad and staff lived and trained together at the Dream99 base. The setup allowed for multiple sessions each day and plenty of time off the field to build relationships and set the culture the team wants to carry through the campaign.
That time together has already tightened the group. Second-year players have stepped up as guides for first-years, who are about to begin efterskole, while also keeping an eye on their own next step toward the U19s. The daily proximity within the academy has made it easier for players to see what comes next and to integrate across age groups.
The older players have taken real responsibility, continuing the work started last season so the team did not have to begin from scratch. The newcomers have been asked to adapt quickly to a squad already moving at high speed, a dynamic the staff believes can pay off both in the opener and over time.
The roster blends experience and potential. Many second-years logged U17 league minutes last year and understand the demands, which helps bring the rest along. Coaches view the group as strong and deep across both age bands, while noting that development is not linear: some who dominate now may maintain that level, and others may emerge later. The aim is to keep a consistent team framework while individual trajectories rise and dip.
On the pitch, the staff expects the attacking output that has defined recent seasons, with goals and chance creation, while carrying over defensive strides made in the spring. The team looks more robust without the ball, better at limiting opponents’ chances, and stronger in its pressing, giving the squad a firmer defensive base from the start.
Two priorities set the tone for the season. The first is team identity: playing assertively with the ball and pressing aggressively without it, including an immediate counter-press after turnovers, in line with club principles. The second is individual growth: mapping each player’s key strengths and development areas so their best qualities appear more often.
The coach anticipates a side that hunts the game in all phases—unpredictable and forward-minded in possession and proactive in winning the ball back quickly.
There is also recognition that not every match will click. The goal is to stick to the identity and produce solid performances on tougher days, while enjoying the moments when everything comes together.
