FC Midtjylland’s U19 women captured the cup on Wednesday night, edging Fortuna Hjørring in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw at DS Arena in Hobro. This thrilling encounter showcased the determination and talent of the young players, leading to a memorable victory.
Road to the Final
The run to the final began in September with a solid 2-0 win over FC Thy. Midtjylland then knocked out Silkeborg IF in the quarterfinals and Kolding IF in the semifinals to set up a meeting with Fortuna, who were second in the U19 league and posed a significant challenge.
Conditions were tough on the night of the final, with rain creating a heavy pitch that affected both teams’ performance. Fortuna started strong in the opening minutes, but Midtjylland gradually found their rhythm. The breakthrough came in the 18th minute when a left-side cross from Anna Bülow was expertly turned in by Mille Kjærgaard, putting Midtjylland ahead 1-0.
Despite Midtjylland’s initial lead, Fortuna maintained more possession for the remainder of the first half. Both teams struggled to create clear chances, with Midtjylland attempting shots from distance that failed to find the net. After halftime, Midtjylland emerged with aggressive high pressing and quick transitions, and Lærke Mølholm came close with a shot that rolled just wide of the goal.
As the match progressed, the slippery pitch began to affect Midtjylland’s performance, allowing Fortuna to regain momentum. They pressed hard, and goalkeeper Sarah Dandanell made crucial saves to keep the scoreline intact. However, the pressure paid off for Fortuna in the 78th minute when a corner from Sidsel Norup Frandsen was headed in by Tilde Andersen, equalizing the match at 1-1.
With both teams unable to score again before full-time, the match went to penalties. In the shootout, Fortuna faltered with their first attempt, while Midtjylland confidently converted all of theirs, securing the trophy and their place in U19 women’s football history.
Midtjylland’s starting XI for the final included Sarah Dandanell, Thea Foss, Anna Bülow, Marie Alkærsig, Lærke Mølholm, Maya Lefeuvre, Astrid Nautrup, Frida Binderup, Mathilde Jessen, Caroline Ahle, and Mille Kjærgaard, with substitutes Line Aagesen, Josefine Ravn Bækgaard, and Sofie Ravn Bækgaard contributing to the team’s success.
