The International World Games Association has recently admitted the International Chess Federation (FIDE) as a member following a vote at its Annual General Meeting held at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne on April 25, 2026. This landmark decision marks a significant moment in the evolution of both organizations and the broader recognition of mind sports.

Impact of FIDE’s Membership in IWGA

The decision to include FIDE as a member comes after a thorough review of its application, increasing the number of IWGA member federations to 40. The IWGA has described this move as part of its ongoing effort to broaden the range of sports represented in the World Games movement and extend its global reach. By integrating chess into its framework, the IWGA acknowledges the importance of mind sports and their growing popularity.

FIDE, as the governing body for chess, brings with it an established international structure along with a large community of players and stakeholders. The leaders of IWGA believe that the inclusion of chess will support a more diverse mix of disciplines, further promoting the value of mental acuity in sports.

FIDE’s leadership has characterized this development as a recognition of chess’s global presence and the significance of mind sports alongside traditional athletic events. This recognition is an opportunity to further integrate chess into the broader landscape of sports, while also enhancing its visibility and participation on a global scale.

Moving forward, the IWGA plans to collaborate with FIDE on future opportunities within The World Games framework. This partnership is expected to not only elevate the status of chess but also inspire other mind sports to seek similar recognition and inclusion.

The IWGA itself is a non-profit international sports body that is recognized and supported by the International Olympic Committee. It organizes The World Games, which is a multi-sport event held every four years, featuring popular, traditional, emerging, and trend sports. The last edition of The World Games took place in Chengdu, China, from August 7 to 17, 2025, showcasing the talents of 4,000 athletes from over 110 countries. The upcoming edition is scheduled for Karlsruhe, Germany, from July 19 to 29, 2029, marking 40 years since the city last hosted this prestigious event in 1989.

With FIDE’s inclusion in the IWGA, the landscape of global sports is set to evolve, inviting more attention and opportunities for chess and other mind sports in the years to come.
