Henrik Hansen, currently an assistant coach at Brøndby IF, will take over as Denmark’s U20 men’s national team coach on July 1. This decision is part of a revamped Danish FA structure that emphasizes player development and the pathway toward the U21s and, in the longer term, the senior national team.
Henrik Hansen’s Coaching Journey and Responsibilities
The 46-year-old has an extensive coaching background, having worked at OB and SønderjyskE before his recent position at Brøndby. In his new role, Hansen will play a crucial part in shaping the strategic direction for the U20 team, ensuring that standards remain high in both domestic and international competitions.
A key priority for Hansen is preparing the next U21 squad for the 2027/28 season. The plan is designed to make the transition from U19 and U20 to U21 smoother while enhancing collaboration with clubs and focusing on individual player development. This strategic approach aims to create a more effective pathway for young talents to progress through the ranks.
DBU’s head of men’s talent development, Kenneth Brogaard, has described Hansen’s appointment as a significant step in the federation’s ongoing efforts at the U20 level. Brogaard stated that Hansen’s experience aligns well with DBU’s sporting and developmental objectives. The federation expects him to strengthen alignment across the talent pathway, provide continuity in player progression, and cultivate an environment conducive to growth for both players and staff.
Hansen, who has dedicated over 25 years to club football, embraces the transition to national team responsibilities. He believes the timing is perfect for focusing on top prospects and aims, alongside his staff, to guide the upcoming U20 cohort in their development. This initiative will be crucial in ensuring that Denmark continues to produce top-quality footballers.
His appointment is set for one year. With this change, DBU is also revising its coaching structure: the U20 men’s team and the U23 women’s team will no longer share a coach. The U23 setup is being strengthened in line with the broader restructuring efforts. Additionally, Hansen will contribute to the wider sporting framework surrounding Denmark’s other youth national teams, thereby enhancing the overall development strategy for young athletes in Denmark.
