Jakob Poulsen wants to turn AGF into an attacking powerhouse in the 2026/27 season

Since taking charge of AGF in the summer of 2025, head coach Jakob Poulsen has set out to reshape the team’s identity, especially in possession. He inherited a side that was already organized and reliable without the ball, but he raised the bar offensively, urging a more ambitious approach that accepts calculated risk to hurt opponents even under pressure.

Poulsen’s Tactical Evolution at AGF

From his time at Viborg FF, he brought a strong emphasis on bravery on the ball and the ability to play through a high press. Defensively, he adapted to AGF’s squad profile: where Viborg relied more on zonal, patient defending, AGF has shifted toward a more aggressive, man-to-man style.

The start was bumpy, with no wins in the first three league matches, but Poulsen highlighted early signs that the plan was working. Inside the club, the focus was on expecting setbacks, resisting sudden tactical overhauls, and concentrating on training, performances, and other controllable factors.

That stance held in the run-in. Even after being caught late in the season, AGF responded and won the championship by staying true to their principles. A spring defeat away to FC Midtjylland, regarded as one of Denmark’s toughest away fixtures, was treated as evidence of progress and a source of belief rather than a cue to change course.

For Poulsen, perseverance means trusting the foundations that make the team effective: a solid defensive platform with collective recovery runs and counter-pressing, and in-possession patterns that reliably create chances.

Looking ahead to 2026/27, AGF intends to refine its recognizable style by becoming sharper in chance creation and adding greater tactical flexibility. This comes as opponents remain tactically strong and the squad adapts to the departure of two key players while integrating new arrivals.

The staff also aims to strengthen defensive transitions, identified as the team’s most vulnerable phase, while maintaining attacking intent. The goal is an entertaining brand built around scoring and initiative, executed with control rather than naivety — a balance Poulsen prefers as a coach.
