Jannik Sinner learned his route through the Mutua Madrid Open after Monday’s draw, as the world No. 1 begins his push for a fifth straight ATP Masters 1000 title. The tournament runs from April 22 to May 3. Sinner will open against a qualifier and could meet last year’s quarterfinalist Gabriel Diallo in the third round. Tommy Paul is a possible fourth-round opponent, with Alex de Minaur the highest seed he could face in the quarterfinals. Rising talents Joao Fonseca and Rafael Jodar also landed in De Minaur’s section. Jodar, 19, arrives with momentum after a title in Marrakech and a semifinal in Barcelona; he would play De Minaur in the second round if he gets past Jesper de Jong. Fonseca starts against the winner of Zizou Bergs versus Marin Cilic.
Potential Semifinal Showdowns
Ben Shelton, Lorenzo Musetti, and Arthur Fils are among Sinner’s potential semifinal opponents. Shelton and Fils enter Madrid fresh from titles in Munich and Barcelona, respectively. Shelton begins against Matteo Berrettini or Raphael Collignon, while Fils faces Ignacio Buse or Adrian Mannarino; the two could collide in the fourth round. Sixth seed Musetti, a Madrid semifinalist last year, will face Hubert Hurkacz or a qualifier in his opener and could meet Miami finalist Jiri Lehecka in the fourth round. Sinner has never advanced beyond the quarterfinals in Madrid but has been dominant on the Masters stage this season, winning in Paris, Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte Carlo while dropping just one set across those four events.
In the bottom half, second seed Alexander Zverev is projected to face Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals. Medvedev holds a 14–8 edge in their head-to-head series. Two-time Madrid champion Zverev opens against Nuno Borges or Mariano Navone and could see Ugo Humbert in the third round and Jakub Mensik in the fourth. Medvedev is seeded to meet Munich finalist Flavio Cobolli or Learner Tien in the last 16.
Third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime will play Sebastian Baez or a qualifier in his first match. Eighth seed Alexander Bublik could cross paths with Stefanos Tsitsipas, while defending champion Casper Ruud starts against Jaume Munar or Alexander Shevchenko. Notably, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic are not competing in Madrid. Main-draw play begins Wednesday, with the final set for May 3.
