Jens Jønsson returns home to AGF after ten years abroad

AGF has officially re-signed midfielder Jens Jønsson on a two-year contract, marking the return of the 33-year-old to Aarhus a decade after he initially left for an international career. Jønsson will don his old number 16 jersey and joins the squad at Fredensvang immediately following the conclusion of his contract with AEK Athens.

Jens Jønsson’s Football Journey

Jønsson began his football journey at Viby IF before moving to IF Lyseng, ultimately joining AGF’s youth setup in 2005. During his time in the youth team, he achieved a national youth title, showcasing his potential early on. He made his senior debut for AGF in October 2011 in a domestic cup match against Vejle Boldklub. Over the course of his tenure at AGF, he made 120 first-team appearances before departing in 2016.

Following his time at AGF, Jønsson played for several clubs across various leagues, including Konyaspor in Turkey, Cádiz in Spain, and AEK Athens in Greece. During these stints, he accumulated nearly 300 top-flight appearances, earning both cup trophies and league titles, and participated in numerous European matches. Additionally, he has made five caps for Denmark’s senior national team, further solidifying his experience on the international stage.

AGF has noted that Jønsson has been training with the team in recent weeks and is considered fit and ready to contribute immediately. The club views his return as a homecoming for a player who was developed in Aarhus and brings significant experience and game intelligence to the squad.

This strategic move comes at a crucial time as AGF prepares to defend their championship title from last season while also competing in both the Superliga and European competitions. The addition of Jønsson is expected to bolster the team’s lineup and add depth to their midfield, enhancing their prospects for the upcoming season.
