Evgeni Malkin has agreed to a one-year, $5.5 million contract to remain with the Pittsburgh Penguins, keeping the veteran forward with the team for a 21st NHL season. He turns 40 on July 31 and had been eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
Malkin produced 61 points (19 goals, 42 assists) in 56 regular-season games this past season and added three points (two goals, one assist) in six Stanley Cup Playoff games.
Malkin’s Legacy with the Penguins
A cornerstone in Pittsburgh since being drafted second overall in 2004, Malkin ranks third in franchise scoring with 1,407 points (533 goals, 874 assists), trailing only Sidney Crosby (1,761) and Mario Lemieux (1,723). His 1,269 games played are second in team history, only behind Crosby (1,420).
He has matched a point per game in the postseason, amassing 183 points (69 goals, 114 assists) in 183 playoff appearances. Malkin has also won the Stanley Cup three times with the Penguins (2009, 2016, 2017), solidifying his status as an elite player in the league.
Malkin’s career honors include the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL’s scoring leader in 2008-09 and 2011-12, the Hart Trophy as league MVP in 2011-12, the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 2009, the Ted Lindsay Award in 2011-12, and the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year in 2006-07. These accolades reflect not only his talent but also his consistency and dedication to the game.
Team management indicated that the new deal follows discussions about his role for the upcoming season under coach Dan Muse. This highlights both Malkin’s continued on-ice impact and his importance in mentoring younger players. Malkin, who has long expressed his commitment to Pittsburgh, will continue to be a central figure as the club aims to return to Cup contention.
With this new contract, fans can look forward to witnessing more unforgettable moments from Malkin as he continues to contribute to the Penguins’ legacy in the NHL.
