Gabriel Diallo’s title defense at the Libema Open came to an unexpected halt in the first round on Tuesday in ’s-Hertogenbosch. Adrian Mannarino triumphed with a score of 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, marking an impressive comeback for the 37-year-old Frenchman.

Mannarino Halts Losing Streak

Despite entering the match on a nine-match losing streak, Mannarino demonstrated resilience on the grass courts that he has long favored. The 2019 champion now leads the current field with an impressive 18 career wins at this prestigious event. In their first-ever tour-level meeting, the 24-year-old Canadian, Diallo, showed determination by retrieving a break early in the deciding set. However, Mannarino managed to secure the crucial break to love in the 12th game, sealing a hard-fought two-hour and 30-minute victory. With this win, Mannarino is set to face fourth seed Arthur Rinderknech in the next round, vying for a place in the quarterfinals.

Rain interruptions affected the play on other courts as well. Former champion Tallon Griekspoor, the sixth seed and a home favorite, was leading fellow Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp with a score of 6-2, 6-7(2), 2-0 when the match was suspended for the day. Meanwhile, in another unfinished first-round match, Hubert Hurkacz was ahead of Marton Fucsovics with a score of 6-3, 1-2.

Earlier in the day, Martin Damm secured a solid victory against Jaume Munar, winning 6-4, 6-4. Damm’s victory sets up an exciting meeting with second seed Alex de Minaur in the next round. Additionally, Zhang Zhizhen outlasted Jenson Brooksby in a tightly contested match, winning 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-1. Zhang will now face the winner of the ongoing match between Griekspoor and van de Zandschulp.

The Libema Open continues to provide thrilling tennis action, with surprises and upsets shaping the tournament’s early rounds. Fans and players alike are eager to see how the rest of the competition unfolds.
