Marcus Pettersson’s Performance and Contract Details
Marcus Pettersson, 30, had a solid performance last season, recording 18 points consisting of three goals and 15 assists over the course of 82 games with the Canucks. He has five years remaining on a six-year contract worth $33 million, which he signed on February 5, 2025. This contract carries an average annual value (AAV) of $5.5 million, making him a valuable asset for the Rangers as they strengthen their defensive lineup.
Originally drafted 38th overall by the Anaheim Ducks in 2014, Pettersson has accumulated 180 points, which include 21 goals and 159 assists, across 604 NHL games played with the Ducks, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Canucks. His versatility and experience are expected to bolster the Rangers’ blue line as they aim for a strong playoff contention.
Following the trade of Pettersson, the Canucks quickly moved to fill the void by signing defenseman Jamie Oleksiak to a two-year, $10 million contract, which averages $5 million annually. Oleksiak, 33, had a productive season, posting 15 points from five goals and 10 assists in 78 games with the Seattle Kraken. Over his career, he has amassed 161 points, including 45 goals and 116 assists, in 758 games with the Dallas Stars, Penguins, and Kraken. Vancouver has characterized Oleksiak as a large, mobile, two-way defender who brings size, reach, athleticism, and leadership to their defensive unit.
In addition to these trades, the Rangers further reshaped their defense by acquiring Sean Durzi from the Utah Mammoth in exchange for forward Vincent Trocheck. They also dealt defenseman Will Borgen to the Boston Bruins for a second-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft and a conditional third-round pick in 2028.
