Martin Landaluce earned his first tour-level win on grass at the BOSS OPEN in Stuttgart, rallying past Pierre-Hugues Herbert 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the second round. This remarkable victory marks a significant milestone for the 20-year-old, who played his maiden tour-level match on the grass surface.
Landaluce’s Impressive Comeback
Despite dropping the opening set, Landaluce showcased his resilience by closing out the contest in two hours and 18 minutes. He demonstrated remarkable skill, winning 74 percent of his first-serve points and taking advantage of Herbert’s inconsistent serving, which featured 13 aces but also an alarming 12 double faults. Last season, Landaluce boasted an impressive 8-4 record on grass across all levels, highlighted by a Challenger semi-final in Nottingham and a commendable run to the final round of Wimbledon qualifying.
Looking ahead, Landaluce’s next challenge is against defending champion and second seed Taylor Fritz. Fritz recently faced an unexpected exit in the first round at Roland Garros, losing to Nishesh Basavareddy, which may give Landaluce an opportunity to capitalize on Fritz’s current form.
In another notable match during the tournament, Italy’s Mattia Bellucci upset seventh seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina with a score of 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-1. This victory not only advances Bellucci but also gives him a 2-1 lead in their head-to-head encounters, having previously defeated the Spaniard in Acapulco in February.
Additionally, rain interrupted Roman Safiullin’s match against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard while Safiullin was leading 5-7, 7-6(4), 4-1. The winner of this match will go on to face Belgian qualifier Gauthier Onclin, who secured his spot in the second round by defeating Fabian Marozsan 7-6(6), 6-3.
As the BOSS OPEN continues, tennis fans are eagerly anticipating more thrilling matchups and potential upsets in this competitive ATP 250 event.
